|BEHIND THE SCENES ON|
One of the more unusual orders was for a Toyota commercial that used ten Formula Atlantic race cars.
The commercial was supposed to look like a European grand prix, which was accomplished by shooting the commercial on Catalina Island, by the old casino, and dressing the streets with international flags.
The director insisted on shooting the commercial using the light of dawn which required bringing the cars and drivers over the day before and putting them up in a hotel. On the day of the shoot the fog never lifted until noon and by then the lighting was wrong.
The production company had no choice but to keep the cars on rental for another day and put the car owners up in the hotel for another day, as well as giving all the owners money to buy lunch and dinner. The next day, once again the fog didn't lift in time and the cars were kept on rental. Finally, on the third day, the weather cooperated and the commercial was shot.
